Red Cross’ record-breaking Great North Run team
| The British Red Cross’ biggest-ever team of fundraising runners raised more than £100,000 at the Great North Run on 5 October.
In total, a whopping 350 spirited athletes basked in the sunshine as they tackled the world’s most popular half-marathon between Newcastle and South Shields. | | |

| After their exertions in the 13.1-mile race, the runners were able to soothe their aching muscles with a free massage and enjoy refreshments in the Red Cross tent at the finish line.
“I’ve never been so hungry in my life – I just wolfed down loads of coffees and two packs of biscuits,” said Dan Timms, one of the runners. “Going over the Tyne bridge was just perfect – the Red Arrows were flying over my head, I was listening to a great song and the weather was beautiful. It was amazing. I’ll definitely do it again.”
Marathons and runs
The Great North Run is just one of a year-round series of runs that Red Cross teams take part in, including the London and New York marathons, the Great Manchester Run and the Great South Run.
First aid
Red Cross first aiders were also out in force at the run, as part of the charity’s largest provision of medical support at a public event. More than 450 volunteers and 23 ambulances from the Red Cross and St John Ambulance were stationed along the route to support the 52,000 runners.
Judi Evans, Red Cross operations director for the North East Territory, said: “The Great North Run gives hundreds of volunteers from across the country the opportunity to develop and practise skills which they would use in the event of a major national incident.”
