Michael Burke gave a moving speech at a fundraising conference in September about his personal experience of the Red Cross in his work as a foreign correspondent. That month saw Ian Hislop join the locals down his local at a special pub quiz, which raised funds for the Red Cross. Impressionist and comedian Rory Bremnar entertained a host of Red Cross supporters at a special one-off ‘An audience with…’ event in October. While November William Roche aka Ken Barlow took time out of Coronation Street to attend the Red Cross’ Northern Ball in Manchester.

 | | | Actor Ricky Tomlinson (pictured with Red Cross Cyberman volunteer!) showed just how much fun volunteering for your local Red Cross shop could be when he spent the day helping out behind the till in Merseyside. Ricky’s visit was part of ‘£1 million fortnight’ in which Red Cross shops went all out to raise a million in two weeks… something they were successful at of course!

 | | | Anatomist Dr Gunther von Hagens (pictured) bought back his Body Worlds exhibition – The Mirror of time – to London’s O2 Arena, and the Red Cross will be there too promoting vital first aid messages to the visiting public. Dr von Hagens said: “I hope this exhibition will encourage people to strive to live with inspiration every day throughout their lives”. The exhibition runs until August 2009. | |

 | | | BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson CBE (pictured) was guest of honour at a dinner in Surrey that raised more than £20,000 for the British Red Cross. Mr Simpson, gave a speech at the end of a successful evening at the RAC Club in Epsom. John Simpson said: "I have been a journalist for some 40 years and the Red Cross is always the organization that’s first on the scene of any disaster or emergency. I have huge respect and admiration for the volunteers of the Red Cross and over the years I have seen for myself their tireless work. The organisation has a superb reputation and deservedly."
